EXPLORE · LIVE LIGHTNING

See live lightning detection at work.

Lightning Front combines live lightning, thousands of detection stations, rain radar and a replayable timeline. Here you can see how the measurement network turns radio signals into positions on the map.

FROM RADIO WAVE TO MAP

How Lightning Front follows a lightning event

Lightning is not “seen” by a single antenna. The network calculates a location from the same radio signal reaching several receivers.

01

Receivers listen

A lightning event produces a very short radio pulse. Stations such as 3279 record its precise arrival time.

02

The network calculates

Differences in arrival time determine the location. Select a strike to inspect the participating station lines.

03

Inspect the geometry

Public station positions and detection lines show which receivers contributed to a selected strike.

04

Add weather context

Rain radar, local weather and the replayable timeline help you interpret the live detections without predicting a storm track.

PRIVACY · PLAIN LANGUAGE

What Lightning Front remembers — and what it does not

There are no advertising profiles, tracking pixels or data sales. Optional research starts only after consent and can always be disabled from the live map menu.

01

Necessary preferences

The language cookie is kept for up to one year. Map appearance, refresh rate, open panels and panel positions remain locally on this device until you reset them or clear browser data.

02

Optional anonymous research

If allowed, our own server counts the action type, page, language, broad screen-size class and desktop/mobile interface. It stores no cookie ID, account, exact location or raw IP in the research event. Events are removed after no more than 13 months.

03

Location and weather context

Device location is requested only after your choice. It stays in browser memory while the map is open. When you request weather context, rounded coordinates are sent through our API to Open-Meteo for that request and are not added to the research statistics.

04

Map and live-data services

The browser retrieves the base map from OpenFreeMap and optional rain images from RainViewer. Lightning and station data comes from Blitzortung participants through Lightning Front. These providers receive the normal technical request data required to deliver their content.

PERSONAL RECEIVER · STATION 3279

One station makes the global network personal.

The receiver at home continuously provides timing information to Blitzortung. Lightning Front stores only sanitised technical statistics and builds its own verifiable participation history.
